SAO PAULO — Breakfast was served from 9 to 11 a.m. at the hotel serving as the United States national team headquarters for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Attendance was optional. “Not one of them took the option,” said Michael Kammarman, the team’s press officer.

The U.S players slept. After an overnight plane ride back from Natal that landed here at 3:30 a.m., they did not bounce out of bed and commence reliving the glorious moments from the night before.
