Another coaching change at Wake Forest and a new system. Coach Dave Clawson will run a multiple offense and will put in a system that will fit the current players on the roster. Clawson comes to the Demon Deacons after leading Bowling Green to a 10-3 record in 2013. Coach Clawson will have to make the new offense run without four year starter QB Tanner Price, WR Michael Campanaro and RB Josh Harris. The QB battle will be between Sophomore Tyler Cameron and Junior Frank Sousa. Sousa was recruited by Michigan as a QB but played WR last season. Running back turned flanker, Orville Williams is moving back to running back. Wide receivers Tyree Harris and E.J. Scott will provide Wake Forest with excellent down field receivers. The offensive line returns three starters including LG Tyler Hayworth, C Cory Helms and RT Dylan Intemann. Wake Forest averaged only 18.3 points per game last year and never scored over 21 points in their eight losses.
Wake Forest will have to rely on its defense because of the question marks on offense. The issue will be the defensive line after losing all four starters from 2013. The Demon Deacons are moving to a 4-2-5 scheme. Losing DT Nikita Whitlock will be hard to overcome. Former LB Zachary Allen will be moved to DE to fill a huge need at that position if he stays healthy. Johnny Garcia, Tylor Harris and Desmond Floyd will fill the other three spots up front. The experience on defense will come from the LB’s and DB’s. Brandon Chubb is back after registering 87 tackles in 2013. Marquel Lee, Teddy Matthews and Hunter Williams all return to form a very effective linebacker corp. Williams will likely be the fifth man in the secondary, holding the hybrid spot. SS Ryan Janvion is coming off a great freshman year, collecting 95 tackles. Kevin Johnson and Merrill Noel return as two of the better cornerbacks in the ACC.
Wake Forest will have to count on its defense until the offense catches up. Starting from scratch with a new QB and a new scheme will take time. Coach Clawson has built winning programs at Richmond, Fordham and Bowling Green and will bring new energy to BB&T Filed, but it will take some time to get this program going in the right direction.
