Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1982 - Pres)

The Golden Hurricanes won 11 games in 2012 but fell completely off the table in 2013 by winning only three.  Now Tulsa moves from C-USA to the AAC.  Tulsa’s explosive offense of 2012 hit the skids last season averaging only 21 points per game. Tulsa has a new offensive coordinator in Denver Johnson.  Johnson will have his work cut out for him with only four returning starters. There will be question marks everywhere including the skill positions.  There is potential in FL Keevan Lucas and WR Thomas Roberson but the passing game will depend on consistency at QB. Dane Evans started five games last season, but hasn’t taken control of the starting job.  Evans completed only 43.1 percent of his passes and threw for only four touchdowns and had ten interceptions. Freshman Jabe Burgess will get a shot to start in the fall. The offensive line will be a staple after allowing only ten sacks in 2013.

Eight starters return on defense including DE Derrick Alexander. Alexander led Tulsa with 6.5 sacks last year and should be one of the top pass rushers in the AAC. Joining Alexander will be Jesse Brubaker, Derrick Luetjen and Chris Hummingbird.  The Hurricanes must find a replacement for LB Shawn Jackson who had 5.5 sacks, 18.5 tackles-for-loss and 124 total tackles.  Mitchell Osborn and Trent Martin have the most experience back at LB. The secondary returns everyone led by S Michael Mudoh who had a team leading 133 tackles.

2013 was a huge disappointment for Tulsa and now they move into a better conference.  The QB position is a concern and with so many new starters on offense, 2014 will be a tough year.  The defense will have to carry the load until the offense catches up.
