2014 WYOMING COWBOYS PREVIEW
June 12, 2014INDIANA SPORTS PAGE
2013 Record: (5-7, 3-5)
The Wyoming Cowboys are going through another change…a new coach and a new QB. Craig Bohl takes over for Dave Christiansen. As for the new QB, let’s wait and see. Wyoming’s offense was explosive in 2013 led by QB Brett Smith. Smith left early for the NFL. Jason Thompson was expected to take over for Smith but then he transferred to Utah. Now Coach Bohl will look to Senior Colby Kirkegaard. The competition will include Sophomore Tom Thorton and Sam Stratton.
The Cowboys also lost their top receiver in Robert Herron (72 receptions nine TD’s). Returning will be Dominic Rufran (75 receptions), Jalen Claiborne and Sophomore Tanner Gentry. The true strength of the offense is at running back. Shaun Wick rushed for 979 yards and nine scores last season and D.J. May is back as well. Wyoming will change its offense from the spread to the West Coast attack. The Cowboys will now rely more on their TE’s and FB’s. The offensive line returns three starters including C Rafe Kiely, RG Jake Jones and RT Conner Rains.
Wyoming’s defense gave up 482 yards per game including 220.2 on the ground. With a new coach will also come a change in their defense. Wyoming will switch from the 3-4 to the 4-3. Coach Bohl coaches a Tampa 2 defense. The front four will feature All-MWC DE Eddie Yarbrough and Senior DT Patrick Mertens. The Cowboys will be solid at LB with Senior Mark Nzeocha and Senior Devyn Harris. Three of four starters return in the secondary. Seniors Blair Burns and DeAndre Jones return at the corners. Darrenn White will return at FS after missing time in 2013 because of a shoulder injury.
Coach Bohl had great success at North Dakota State and many feel he is the perfect fit for the Cowboys. Bohl inherits 16 starters and that is a plus. If he doesn’t find a QB, the Cowboys may struggle in 2014, especially on road trips to Oregon and Michigan State.
