2014 TEMPLE OWLS FOOTBALL PREVIEW
June 9, 2014INDIANA SPORTS PAGE
2013 Record: (2-10, 1-7)
The Owls got off to a horrible start in 2013 and managed only two wins, one in the AAC. QB PJ Walker returns after completing 60.8 percent of his passes and 20 touchdowns. Walker also rushed for 332 yards and another three TD’s. The best new about Walker is he is only a sophomore. The bad news for Walker will be losing four starters on the offensive line. Center Kyle Friend is the only returning starter. The Owls have a good running attack with Kenneth Harper and Zaire Williams returning. Temple also returns two veteran receivers in Jalen Fitzpatrick and John Christopher. Losing Robby Anderson and Ryan Alderman will be difficult to replace.
Temple’s defense gave up 473.6 yards per game in 2013. Returning are LB’s Tyler Matakevich, Nate Smith and Stephaun Marshall. Matakevich led the team in tackles with 137. Temple’s defensive line will have to get more pressure on the opposing QB. The issue here is the Owls have only one returning starter in Matt Ioannidis. Looking to fill the gap will be DE Bryan Osei, NG Averee Robinson and DE Sharif Finch. The secondary will also see three new starters which is dangerous in the ACC and its’ throwing QB’s. Tavon Young is back at CB. Young had 51 tackles in 2013. Opposing team’s attempted 431 passes against the Owls.
Temple finished 2-10 in 2013 because they melted down the stretch in too many games. With QB Walker back will make a huge difference with a year’s experience under his belt. The defense will count on their experienced LB’s but the secondary will have to play better. By mid-season we’ll see if the Owls can turn it around.
