There is plenty of good news for the Troy Trojans and it begins at QB where Brandon Silvers and Dontreal Pruitt will battle for the starting job. Pruitt isn’t big but he is a playmaker and knows how to win. Silvers is more a natural passer and has better size at 6-2. The running game will be led by Brandon Burks and Jordan Chunn. Burks is the outside attck while Chunn will gain yards up the middle (14 TD’s). Whoever the QB will be will have a homerun threat in WR Bryan Holmes. Holmes had five receptions of more than 50 yards in 2013. He will be joined by Chandler Worthy, BJ Chitty, KD Edenfield and Jarvis Bentley. The offensive line will be anchored by OT Terrance Jones, OT Antonio Garcia, RG Tommy Stephens and C Dalton Bennett. This line gave up only 19 sacks last season.
The Trojans defense has work to do in 2014. Last season they gave up 35.9 ppg and allowed 483.2 yards per contest (112th in the nation). Losing three starters up front won’t make things easier. The Trojans also lost their top two tacklers in safeties Camren Hudson and Chris Pickett. DE Tyler Roberts is back leading the defense. Roberts was named All-Sun Belt after recording 5.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. Roberts will be joined by DE Jamal Stadom and DT’s Billy Dodds and Lonnie Gosha. Dodds is moving inside from DE last season. Jeremy Spikner will also see considerable time in 2014.
The linebackers will be solid with Mark Wilson and Wayland Coleman-Dancer. Coleman-Dancer will be the main blitzing LB. The secondary will be manned by Ethan Davis, Keion Payne, Chris Davis and Jacquez Young. JaQuadrian Lewis, Montres Kitchens, Josh Shelton and Joe Lofton will be looking for more playing time.
Troy will improve if they get consistent play from their QB position but if they defense doesn’t improve, it will be hard to match the six win from 2013.
