1936 At Shibe Park, second baseman Tony Lazzeri became the first major league player to hit two grand slams in one game, as the Yankees clobbered the A's, 25-2.
1967 Tommy McCraw drove in eight runs, including three home runs, to help the Chicago White Sox defeat the Minnesota Twins, 14-1.
1986 The Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup four games to one over the Calgary Flames.
1990 The Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup four games to one over the Boston Bruins.
1994 In a game against Milwaukee Brewers, Baltimore's Cal Ripken hit his 300th career home run.
2000 Mark McGwire became the fastest player to hit 20 home runs in one season reaching the mark in 35 games, six less than Mickey Mantle (1956) and his own record (1998).
2000 Sixteen Dodger players and three coaches were suspended by the commissioner's office for going into the stands during the Wrigley Field scuffle with fans on May 16. The suspensions totaling 60 games for players and 24 games for coaches was the harshest penalty ever handed down by major league baseball.
2009 Helio Castroneves avoided a rash of accidents and led the final 58 laps to win the Indianapolis 500 for the third time in his career.
2010 Jeff Carter notched a pair of goals and Mike Richards picked up a goal and two assists, as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Montreal Canadiens by a 4-2 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals.
2010 The Cleveland Cavaliers fired head coach Mike Brown.
2011 Kevin Bieksa scored on a knuckling slap shot midway through the second overtime, lifting the Vancouver Canucks to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.
2012 The University of Texas at Arlington accepted an invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference next year.
