1928 The Summer Olympics had their opening ceremonies in Amsterdam, Holland.
1970 At Crosley Field, Atlanta's Hank Aaron collected his 3000th hit with an infield single off Cincinnati's Wayne Simpson.
1979 The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Chicago Cubs in a fifty-hit slugfest at Wrigley Field, 23-22. The 11 home runs hit in the game tied a major league mark.
1985 The Texas Rangers fired manager Doug Rader and replaced him with New York Mets third base coach Bobby Valentine.
1993 Seattle's Mike Blowers became 13th player in baseball history to hit grand slams in consecutive games.
1998 New York Yankees pitcher David Wells became the 13th pitcher in baseball history to toss a perfect game. The Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins, 4-0.
2003 Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide made it 2-for-2 this year in Triple Crown events with a victory in the 128th Preakness Stakes.
