1942 Braves pitcher Jim Tobin, en route to a 6-5 victory over the Cubs, became the first hurler to hit three home runs in one game.
1958 As a pinch-hitter, Stan Musial collected his 3000th hit off Moe Drabowsky as the Cardinals beat the Cubs, 5-3.
1982 At the Astrodome, the Cubs won their 8,000th game in franchise history.
1985 A day before his 43rd birthday at Cinergy Field, Tony Perez goes deep with the bases full in the Reds 7-3 victory over the Phillies to become the oldest player to hit a grand slam.
1985 One day before his 40th birthday, Royals third baseman George Brett hit his 300th career home run.
2002 Baseball's Jose Canseco announced his retirement.
2009 The Miami Dolphins signed defensive lineman Jason Taylor to a one-year contract.
2010 Kevin Garnett scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds helping the Boston Celtics advance to the Eastern Conference finals. They defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 94-85, in Game 6 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.
2010 The Kansas City Royals fired manager Trey Hillman. Ned Yost was named manager.
2011 The Boston Celtics signed basketball Doc Rivers coach to a five-year contract extension through the 2015-16 season.
