INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Visiting Miami (Ohio) used strong pitching and an opportunistic offense to hand Butler a 4-1 setback in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at the Butler Softball Field on Tuesday, April 29. The second game was called in the bottom of the first inning because of rain.
The RedHawks (19-25) controlled the opener behind the right arms of senior Paige Myers and sophomore Jenna Modic. Myers held the Bulldogs to one run on four hits through the first four innings, while picking up her ninth win in 17 decisions. She had two strikeouts and one walk in her stint.
Modic came on in the fifth inning and blanked the Bulldogs on no hits over the final three frames, while earning her third save of the season. She recorded three strikeouts and allowed one walk.
Miami took advantage of two walks and a couple of Butler errors to take the lead with two unearned runs in the third inning. The RedHawks added two more runs on three hits in the sixth inning.
Butler (23-26) scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Alex Kotter started the inning with a double to left field, and she advanced to third on a fly ball to right field by Kristen Boros. Senior Krista Hakola then plated Kotter with a single up the middle.
Sophomore Kristin Gutierrez pitched the first five-and-two-thirds innings and surrendered all four runs. She had six strikeouts and two walks, while falling to 14-11 on the year. Freshman Allie Tarrant pitched the final inning-and-a-third, allowing just two hits.
