1961 The NFL chose Canton, Ohio as the site for the Professional Football Hall of Fame.
1961 Five days after celebrating his 40th birthday, Warren Spahn twirled the second no-hitter of his career, a 1-0 victory over San Francisco at Milwaukee.
1966 Boston gave head coach Red Auerbach his eighth straight and final NBA title as the Celtics took out the Los Angeles Lakers, 95-93 in Game Seven.
1971 Hank Aaron joined only Willie Mays and Babe Ruth in the 600 home run club.
1985 Billy Martin was named manager of the New York Yankees for the fourth time.
1987 The NBA announced expansion into the Charlotte and Miami markets for the 1988 season and Minneapolis and Orlando in 1989.
1988 The Baltimore Orioles suffered their 21st straight defeat, a 4-2 verdict at the hands of the Minnesota Twins. It was the longest losing streak ever to start a season.
1995 Michael Jordan, in his first playoff game since his one-year hiatus from the game, scored 48 points to lift the Chicago Bulls past the Charlotte Hornets, 108-100.
1995 The Orlando Magic embarrassed the Boston Celtics, 124-77, in the Celtics worst playoff loss in franchise history.
1996 The Winnipeg Jets, scheduled to move to Phoenix for the 1996-97 season, lost their final game to the Detroit Red Wings, 6-1 in the first round of the NHL Playoffs.
2003 San Antonio's Gregg Popovich was named the NBA's Coach of the Year.
2004 The New York Giants released quarterback Kerry Collins.
2007 The Oakland Raiders selected LSU QB JaMarcus Russell with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft.
2007 St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Josh Hancock was killed in a car accident. He was 29 years old.
2008 Pat Riley stepped down as head coach of the Miami Heat. Erik Spoelstra was named the new head coach.
2009 The Pittsburgh Penguins named interim coach Dan Bylsma the full-time head coach.
2010 The Montreal Canadiens upset top-seeded Washington Capitals 2-1, in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.
2011 The Carolina Panthers selected Auburn QB Cam Newton with first overall pick in the NFL Draft.
2012 Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose will be out for the remainder of the playoffs with a torn ligament in his left knee.
2012 Chad Dawson defeated Bernard Hopkins in a 12-round decision to capture the WBC Light Heavyweight belt.
2013 The Colorado Avalanche fired head coach Joe Sacco.
2013 The Dallas Stars fired general manager Joe Nieuwendyk.
