Ohio State Wins Big Ten Mens Tennis Tournament

ROSEMONT, Ill. - With a 4-2 victory over No. 2 seed Illinois, top-seeded Ohio State
claimed the 2014 Big Ten Men's Tennis Tournament Championship Sunday afternoon at
MSU Outdoor Courts in East Lansing, Mich. The Buckeyes earned their second
consecutive conference tournament crown and fifth overall.
Ohio State, which won its ninth straight Big Ten Championship with an unblemished
11-0 regular season record, earned the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead with
victories at the No. 1 and 2 doubles positions.
The match was tied, 2-2, following the first three singles matches as Illinois'
Jared Hiltzik and Farris Gosea were victorious at the No. 1 and 2 singles positions,
respectively, and Ohio State's Ralf Steinbach won at No. 3 singles. Hiltzik earned a
7-5, 6-2 win over Peter Kobelt while Gosea defeated Herkko Pollanen, 6-2, 6-4.
Steinbach topped Tim Kopinski, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
The decisive points came at the No. 5 and 6 singles positions, where Ohio State's
Hunter Callahan and Kevin Metka each won their matches in straight sets to clinch
the victory for the Buckeyes. Callahan defeated Ross Guignon, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, while
Metka earned a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) decision over Alex Jesse.
With the win, Ohio State earns the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA
Championships. Team draws for the NCAA Championships will be announced at 5 p.m. ET
on Tues., April 29, while individual draws will be announced at 6 p.m. on Wed.,
April 30. Both selection shows will be available on NCAA.com.
