Northwestern Earns Big Ten Womens Tennis Tournament Championship

ROSEMONT, Ill. - With a 4-3 victory over top-seeded seed Michigan, No. 2 seed
Northwestern won the 2014 Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament Championship Sunday
afternoon at Combe Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill. The Wildcats earned their second
consecutive conference tournament crown and fifth overall.
Northwestern found itself down early as Michigan earned the doubles point and a 1-0
lead in the match with victories at the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions.
The Wolverines extended the lead to 2-0 as Emina Bektas fought back for a 2-6, 7-5,
6-0 win over Nothwestern's Veronica Corning at the No. 1 singles position. The
Wildcats then cut the lead to 2-1 as Alicia Barnett defeated Michigan's Sarah Lee,
6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles position.
The two schools continued to trade singles matches as the Wolverines' Brooke
Bolender earned a 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Manon Peri at No. 4 singles and
Northwestern's Lok Sze Leung posted a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Amy Zhu at No. 5
Now trailing 3-2, Northwestern needed victories in both No. 2 and 6 singles to claim
the title. Nida Hamilton tied the score at 3-3 with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over
Michigan's Laura Ucros at No. 6 singles, meaning that the match would be decided at
No. 2 singles.
In that decisive match, Northwestern's Belinda Niu raced out to a 6-1 win in the
first set before Michigan's Ronit Yurovsky tied the match at one set apiece with a
7-6 victory in the second set. With the match on the line in the third set, Niu came
through with a 7-5 win to clinch the championship for Northwestern.
With the win, Northwestern earns the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA
Championships. Team draws for the NCAA Championships will be announced at 5:30 p.m.
ET on Tuesday, April 29, while individual draws will be announced at 6 p.m. on
Wednesday, April 30. Both selection shows will be available on NCAA.com.
