The following athletes were named players of the week in their respective sports for
the week ending April 20, 2014.
Baseball Hitter - Trevor Kimm, Manchester University
Manchester University's Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind./H.S.) helped the Spartans move
three games ahead of the field in the HCAC standings and has been named the
Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week. The junior
shortstop finished 8-of-15 (.533) at the plate with nine runs scored, two doubles, a
home run, and five RBI, while posting a slugging percentage of .867. The Spartans
dropped a game to Anderson and earned a three-game sweep of Mount St. Joseph on the
road to move three games ahead of Anderson and Rose-Hulman in the race for a league
title. Manchester (20-11, 14-4 HCAC) is scheduled to face Defiance Tuesday and
Earlham over the weekend.
Baseball Pitcher - Taylor Glaze, Franklin College
Franklin College's Taylor Glaze (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic) earned a pair of
victories during the week and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic
Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week. The senior lefty posted a 2-0 record and a
0.64 ERA in two appearances last week. Glaze tossed eight innings and allowed one
run in a victory over Rose-Hulman Tuesday, scattering three hits with seven
strikeouts in the 10-2 win. The senior then threw six scoreless innings in a
relief appearance as the Grizzlies earned a 9-5 win at Transylvania in 14 innings,
striking out six batters with four hits allowed to earn the win. Franklin (19-13,
10-8 HCAC) will face Hanover at Victory Field in Indianapolis Tuesday and will host
Defiance over the weekend.
Softball Hitter - Nichole Frazier, Anderson University
Anderson University's Nichole Frazier (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) led the
Ravens to a 3-1 mark in league play during the week and has been named the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Hitter of the Week for the second time. The
junior shortstop finished the week 8-for-13 (.615) with five runs scored, a double,
two home runs, six RBI, three stolen bases, and a 1.154 slugging percentage as the
Ravens split with Rose-Hulman and swept Transylvania. Anderson (21-6, 11-1 HCAC)
has secured a spot in the HCAC tournament and will face Ohio Northern, Mount St.
Joseph, and Hanover on the road to end the regular season schedule this week.
Softball Pitcher - Carly Heibel, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
Rose-Hulman's Carly Heibel (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Lakewood Park Christian) finished the
week 2-0 and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball
Pitcher of the Week for the second time. The junior tossed two complete game
victories during the week, posting an ERA of 0.88. Heibel recorded a 2-1 win over
Anderson with a six-hitter that included five strikeouts in nine innings of work.
Against Mount St. Joseph, Heibel scattered seven hits with four strikeouts in a 5-2
win. Rose-Hulman (15-11, 9-5 HCAC) has secured a spot in the upcoming HCAC
tournament and will close the conference season at home against Manchester Saturday.
Men's Tennis - Robert Albrecht, Transylvania University
Transylvania University's Robert Albrecht (Lexington, Ky./Christian) helped the
Pioneers earn a 5-4 win over Defiance and has been named the Heartland Collegiate
Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week. The sophomore earned a 6-3,
6-1 win at No. 1 singles and added an 8-4 victory at the No. 1 doubles position.
Transylvania (2-6, 2-2 HCAC) will travel to Anderson for a 10AM match Saturday.
Men's Golf - Phil Gilmore, College of Mount St. Joseph
College of Mount St. Joseph's Phil Gilmore (Wilmington, Ohio/H.S.) earned medalist
honors at the Nye Intercollegiate Invitational over the weekend and has been named
the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golfer of the Week. The senior
golfer fired rounds of 75 and 74 to win the event by two strokes. The Lions placed
third in the team standings.
Men's Track Athlete - Stuart West, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
Rose-Hulman's Stuart West (LaPorte, Ind./H.S.) led the Engineers to the team title
at the Rose-Hulman Twilight Meet and has been named the Heartland Collegiate
Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week. The junior won the
1,500-meters with a time of 4:00.07 as the Engineers won the 12-team meet.
Men's Field Athlete - Stephen Coble, Manchester University
Manchester University's Stephen Coble (Edwardsburg, Mich./H.S.) captured all three
of Manchester's individual titles at the Spartan Classic and has been named the
Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
The junior won the hammer, discus, and shot put at the meet, setting a new school
record in the hammer throw with a heave of 165' 2" (HCAC best). Coble also claimed
the league's best toss in the discus with a winning mark of 141' 5".
Women's Track Athlete - Jordin Fender, Transylvania University
Transylvania University's Jordin Fender (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar) led the Pioneers at
the Centre College Twilight and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic
Conference Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week. The freshman broke the 15
second mark for the first time in her career and in school history, running an
impressive time of 14.79 to win the 100-meter hurdles and set a new meet record.
The winning mark ranks 21st in all of NCAA Division III this outdoor season.
Women's Field Athlete - Ashlee Arbaugh, Hanover College
Hanover College's Ashlee Arbaugh (Findlay, Ohio/Van Buren Local) won the shot put at
the Rose-Hulman Twilight and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic
Conference Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for the second time. The
sophomore won the shot put with a heave of 12.12 meters, while placing third in the
discus (34.91 meters) and sixth in the hammer throw (36.5 meters).
Men's Lacrosse - Zach Roby, Transylvania University
Transylvania University freshman Zach Roby (Hillsborough, NC/Cedar Ridge) led the
Pioneers to a 15-8 win over Illinois Wesleyan and has been named the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week. The freshman
scored three goals to lead the Pioneers offense in the win. Transylvania (5-7) will
close the schedule against Beloit and Alma this week.
Women's Lacrosse - JoNae Apps, Defiance College
Defiance College sophomore JoNae Apps (Wild Rose, Wis./H.S.) led the Jackets offense
in a pair of losses last week and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic
Conference Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week. The sophomore scored two goals in a
13-9 loss to Kalamazoo and added three goals with three ground balls in an 8-5 loss
to Ursuline. Defiance (2-11) will close the schedule against Otterbein, Mount St.
Joseph, and Transylvania this week.
