MICHIGAN SPORTS RELEASE

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The No. 2-seeded University of Michigan men's basketball team (No. 7 AP, No. 8 ESPN/USA Today) advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the second consecutive year, making a tournament program-record 14 three-pointers in defeating No. 7-seeded Texas, 79-65, on Saturday (March 22) inside the BMO Harris Bradley Center. Sophomore Caris LeVert's (Pickerington, Ohio/Central) triple at 14:18 of the first half put U-M up, 9-6, and for good.

Sophomore Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Mark's School [Mass.]) led Michigan with 17 points and tied his career high with eight assists. Graduate student Jordan Morgan (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while sophomores Glenn Robinson III (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) and LeVert each scored 14 points.

Stauskas hit a three for the first basket of the game, but Texas responded with three straight buckets to take a 6-3 lead. Then Stauskas knocked down another triple to start a 10-0 Wolverine run, and Morgan dunked at 13:12 to make the score 13-6.

An old-fashioned three-point play by LeVert made the score 22-10 with 10:35 left in the first half, and freshman Zak Irvin (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) made a triple at 7:22 to put Michigan ahead 30-12. Robinson threw down a dunk off a high alley-oop pass from Stauskas to give U-M a 36-18 lead with 3:39 to go in the first, and LeVert's three with 1:20 left put the Maize and Blue up 43-26. Texas' Isaiah Taylor scored the last four points of the half to make score 43-30 going into the break.

Michigan shot 15-of-28 (54 percent) in the first half and went 8-of-15 (53 percent) from three. Texas went 12-of-30 (40 percent) from the floor and made two of its three attempts from long distance (67 percent). LeVert had a team-high 11 points in the half, while Taylor led all scorers with 12.

POSTGAME AUDIO

Derrick Walton Jr. (Harper Woods, Mich./Chandler Park Academy) drained a three, and Stauskas converted two freebies to put the Wolverines ahead 53-35 with 15:20 left in the game, before the Longhorns answered with an 8-0 run, forcing Michigan to call timeout at 11:55. Stauskas hit a three out of the stoppage, but Texas came back with five straight points to make the score 56-48 with 9:56 remaining.

The Longhorns came within six points of the lead after a Taylor floater brought the score to 58-52 with 8:04 left, but Michigan countered with five points from Robinson. Sophomore Spike Albrecht (Crown Point, Ind./Northfield Mount Hermon Prep [Mass.]) then made a corner three with 6:10 left to reclaim the double-digit lead.

After a Taylor jumper cut Texas' deficit to 68-60, LeVert nailed a triple from the left wing to start an 8-0 run, capped when Morgan made a free throw with 1:05 left.

U-M shot 24-of-54 (44 percent) for the game and made 14 of 28 attempts from three (50 percent). Texas shot 23-of-62 (37 percent) and went 4-of-11 (36 percent) from beyond the arc. The Longhorns won the rebounding battle, 41-30, and Taylor led all scorers with 22 points.

Michigan will play the winner of Sunday's (March 23) game between No. 11 seed Tennessee and No. 14 seed Mercer. The Sweet Sixteen game will be played Friday (March 28) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. Broadcast information and game time are TBA. Limited tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
