Maize & Blue Handles Wofford to Advance in NCAA Tournament

March 21, 2014

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The No. 2-seeded University of Michigan men's basketball team (No. 7 AP, No. 8 ESPN/USA Today) defeated No. 15-seeded Wofford, 57-40, on Thursday night (March 20), to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament inside BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Graduate student Jordan Morgan (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Mark’s School [Mass.]) eclipsed the 1,000 career scoring mark, with 15 points on 5-9 shooting, including 3-of-6 from three. Sophomore Glenn Robinson III (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) posted 14 points and seven rebounds, while his classmate Caris LeVert (Pickerington, Ohio/Central) finished with six points, five rebounds, and four assists in the victory.

Wofford made its first two shots to take a 4-0 lead to start the game, but missed its next 10 attempts. In that time, the Wolverines scored eight points, before a Jaylen Allen jumper made the score 8-6 at the 12:26 mark. Up 12-8, the Maize and Blue went on an 8-0 run in less than three minutes, and Stauskas hit a baseline jumper to make the score 20-8 at 8:09.

U-M went up 27-14 after a Robinson jumper with 3:14 left in the half, and he hit a three less than a minute later to give Michigan a 14-point lead at 30-16, their largest of the half. Two Stauskas free throws with 25 ticks left put the Wolverines ahead 34-20 going into the intermission.

Michigan shot 14-of-22 (64 percent) in the first half, and went 3-of-6 (50 percent) from three. Wofford was 9-of-28 (32 percent) on field goals, and missed all eight of its three-point attempts. Robinson led with 11 first-half points, while Stauskas was right behind with nine.

The Wolverines scored the first four points of the second half to take an 18-point lead, but Wofford came back with eight straight points to make the score 38-28 at 13:01.

The Terriers came within eight points of the lead when Justin Gordon nailed a jumper to make the score 43-35 with 6:55 left in the game, but Michigan responded with a put back by Robinson and a triple by LeVert from the top of the key, making the score 50-35 and forcing Wofford to call timeout with 4:17 to play. Wofford made a basket out of the stoppage, but freshman Derrick Walton Jr. (Harper Woods, Mich./Chandler Park Academy) made a dagger three at the other end to put the Wolverines up 53-37 with 3:39 remaining, and they held on for the 57-40 victory.

U-M finished the night shooting 22-of-46 (48 percent) from the floor and made seven of its 17 attempts from three (41 percent). Wofford shot 18-of-53 (34 percent) for the game, and made only one three out of 19 attempts (5 percent). The Wolverines outrebounded the Terriers, 25-18, and assisted on 15 of their 22 made field goals.

Michigan will play the winner of No. 7 Texas and No. 10 Arizona State on Sunday (March 23) in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Broadcast information is TBD.
