1942 The Thoroughbred Racing Association of the United States was formed with John C. Clark as president.
1949 Jockey Bill Shoemaker rode his first career race at Golden Gate Fields. He finished fifth, aboard Waxahachie, in an eight-horse field.
1954 The first United States boxing match televised in color took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Joey Giardello fought Willy Troy.
1956 The Minneapolis Lakers defeated the St. Louis Hawks 133-75 in Game 2 of the Western Division Finals, the largest margin of victory (58 points) in NBA playoff history.
1967 The Chicago Bulls defeated the LA Lakers 122-109 for their 33rd win of the season, the most ever by an NBA expansion team.
1969 NBA Commissioner Walter Kennedy flipped a coin, Phoenix called "heads" and it turned up "tails". Thus, Milwaukee chose first in the NBA Draft, selecting Lew Alcindor while Phoenix picked Neal Walk.
1993 Blatantly Bald, driven by Bill Gale, won the Cam Fella Series final in 1:55.1 at Greenwood Raceway in Toronto.
1995 Michael Jordan came out of his 17-month retirement and played in his first NBA game for Chicago since Game 6 of the 1993 Finals against Phoenix.
1995 Vreni Schneider clinched third World Cup overall title with victory in women's slalom at Bormio, Italy.
1995 Bonnie Blair retired from competitive speed skating the day after her 31st birthday. She stepped down as the nation's most decorated female Olympian with five gold medals and one bronze since 1988.
1997 Cami Whitestocking, driven by George Brennan, won the Jersey Girls Pace in 1:54.2 at The Meadowlands.
2003 The Boston Bruins fired head coach Robbie Ftorek.
2005 Dallas Mavericks head coach Don Nelson announced his resignation.
2009 The Seattle Sounders FC played their first MLS game. They defeated New York Red Bulls, 3-0.
2010 St. John's fired basketball coach Norm Roberts.
2010 The Arizona Cardinals signed LB Joey Porter to a three-year contract.
2011 Eight-seed Butler upset top seed Pittsburgh 71-70 in the third round of the NCAA college basketball tournament.
2012 The Carolina Panthers signed RB Mike Tolbert to a four-year contract.
2012 The Miami Dolphins signed QB David Garrard to a one-year contract.
2012 The Golden State Warriors retired Chris Mullin's number 17 jersey.
2013 The Dominican Republic won the World Baseball Classic title when they defeated Puerto Rico, 3-0.
2013 The Tennessee signed QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to a two-year contract.
2013 The Indianapolis Colts signed QB Matt Hasselbeck to a two-year contract.
