Smart, Kane Named Mens Basketball Weekly Award Winners

Oklahoma State sophomore Marcus Smart and Iowa State senior DeAndre Kane are the latest Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player and Newcomer of the Week. Smart is honored for the third time in 2013-14, while Kane earns his sixth accolade overall (two player, four rookie) this season.

Smart averaged 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists and 4.5 steals in leading the Cowboys to victories at TCU and versus No. 5 Kansas. The sophomore guard had 17 points in Fort Worth, including 15 from five 3-point field goals. He then scored 21 points, including 20 in the second half, in the OSU win over the Jayhawks. Twelve of his points came in the last 10 minutes of the game, as Smart finished without missing a field goal attempt or having a turnover in that stretch. He has scored in double digits in seven straight outings, including 20 points or more four times.

Kane wins his second consecutive newcomer accolade after Iowa State split its games last week, defeating West Virginia before falling at Kansas State. The senior guard posted 20.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game, while shooting 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from the floor. Kane had his sixth double-double of the year versus the Mountaineers with 17 points and 11 boards before adding 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists at K-State. It was his 11th 20-point effort of the year and his 18th contest with at least five assists.
