BIG TEN MEDAL OF HONOR 100TH ANNIVERSARY SPOTLIGHT
Penn State's Jeff Hartings
Hartings, who won the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1996, anchored a Penn State
offensive line that surrendered only three sacks in 1994 and helped the Nittany
Lions lead the nation in scoring and total offense en route to a 12-0 record. He was
the 11th student-athlete to earn a pair of first-team All-American honors in school
history, earning the accolade in 1994 and 1995. Hartings was a three-time first-team
All-Big Ten selection and was twice named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America
first team. The St. Henry, Ohio, native was also chosen as a National Football
Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete. Hartings was selected
by the Detroit Lions in the first round of the 1996 NFL Draft. He played for the
Lions (1996-2000) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (2001-06), earning All-Pro honors in
2004 and 2006.
Big Ten Title Chase:
Michigan (11-3) claimed sole possession of first-place in the Big Ten standings
after defeating Michigan State (11-4) Sunday at Crisler Center. Wisconsin (9-5) is
in third place, while Iowa (8-5) sits alone in fourth place. The Wolverines play two
games this week, and could clinch a share of the Big Ten Championship with two wins
and a victory by Illinois over the Spartans...
