No. 21 UConn Plays Host To SMU On Sunday At Gampel Pavilion

February 23, 2014

STORRS, Conn. - The No. 21 University of Connecticut men's basketball team returns to Harry A. Gampel Pavilion for the first time in over three weeks when it plays host to SMU on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. The game will be televised by CBS Sports Network with Dave Ryan and Pete Gillen on the call and will also be broadcasted live on the UConn IMG Sports Radio Network.

The Huskies (21-5) are coming off a 68-65 road victory over Temple on Thursday. Four Huskies scored double-digit points, led by 17 points from senior guard Shabazz Napier (Roxbury, Mass.) who was a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. Freshman center Amida Brimah (Accra, Ghana) notched 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting and pulled in five rebounds in the win. The Husky defense shut down the Owl offense in the second half, holding their conference foes to just nine total baskets and a .346 field goal percentage.

The Mustangs come to Storrs with a 21-6 overall record and a 10-4 record in The American. SMU sports a balanced scoring attack with nine players averaging at least five points per game. Sophomore guard Nic Moore has contributed 14.8 points and 2.6 assists in conference games while sophomore Markus Kennedy has been a force on the glass, pulling in 8.0 rebounds per game.

SMU and UConn have met on the hardwood just two times in the past, with the Mustangs holding a 2-0 series edge.

The Huskies came up short in the first meeting between the teams on Jan. 24, falling to the Mustangs, 74-65, at Moody Coliseum. Junior guard Ryan Boatright (Aurora, Ill.) scored a team-high 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting but the SMU offense came out firing in the second half, hitting 15 of its 28 shots (53.6 percent) from the field.

UConn is 10-2 since it fell to SMU in early January and has won seven of its last eight games overall. On Feb. 17, Napier was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. The senior guard has also been named to the conference's weekly honor roll on seven different occasions in 2013-14.

UConn's 1998-99 National Championship team, as well as point guard Khalid El-Amin, will be honored at halftime with their inductions into the Huskies of Honor.
