GONZAGA SPORTS RELEASE

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team opens a four-game road stretch to end the West Coast Conference regular season Thursday at BYU.

Thursday’s game has been changed to an 8 p.m. PST start and will be televised on ESPN2. The change was requested when the weather-delayed Duke University at the University of North Carolina game last Wednesday was moved to this Thursday.

Gonzaga clinched no worse that a tie for the WCC title by defeating Loyola Marymount last Saturday and getting a little help from BYU. The Cougars downed Saint Mary’s College on the road to leave BYU, SMC and the University of San Francisco each with five WCC losses, four behind the 13-1 Bulldogs. Gonzaga needs one victory or a loss by BYU, Saint Mary’s and San Francisco to claim the regular-season title outright and the No. 1 seed into the WCC Basketball Championship.

Gonzaga leads the all-time series with BYU 5-2 in their NCAA Division I meetings, a series that began with an NCAA Tournament meeting in 2011. The Bulldogs have won five straight in the series since dropping the inaugural West Coast Conference meeting between the two schools 83-73 in 2012 in Provo, Utah. The Zags took the re-match in 2012 in Spokane and claimed a WCC Tournament semifinal matchup that same season. The Bulldogs won the first meeting last season 83-63 in the McCarthey Athletic Center and completed the season sweep with a 70-65 victory at the Marriott Center in Provo. Gonzaga won the first meeting this season in Spokane 84-69.

The Cougars, behind All-American Jimmer Fredette, took an 89-67 victory in the 2011 NCAA Third Round in Denver, Colo., the season prior to BYU joining the WCC. The Zags claimed a 46-41 victory Dec. 16, 1949, prior to Gonzaga entering the NCAA Division I ranks.
