1929 Marked the first collegiate basketball doubleheader. New York University upset Notre Dame, 25-18, while Westminster nipped St. John's, 37-33.
1968 Joe Namath hit Don Maynard with a 6-yard touchdown pass to give the New York Jets a 27-23, win over the Oakland Raiders in the Conference Championship. The win sent the Jets to Super Bowl III against the Baltimore Colts.
1994 The Seattle Seahawks fired General Manager/Coach Tom Flores after three seasons, while Denver kicked out Wade Phillips after two seasons.
1997 Dallas' Bubba Wells recorded six fouls in three minutes of a 111-105 loss to the Chicago Bulls. He broke the 41-year old NBA record of five minutes set by Dick Farley of the Syracuse Nationals.
2002 Washington DB Darrell Green retired after 20 seasons.
2002 Despite New England's 27-24, OT win over Miami, the defending Super Bowl champs were eliminated from getting a playoff spot after the New York Jets won the AFC East, as they defeated the Green Bay Packers, 42-17.
2003 It was black Monday in the NFL, as three coaches were fired - Chicago's Dick Jauron, Buffalo's Gregg Williams and Arizona's Dave McGinnis. It was also the last working day for Atlanta's Dan Reeves and NY Giants' Jim Fassel, both of whom were told they would not return for the 2004 season prior to the season finale.
2004 Syracuse fired head football coach Paul Pasqualoni.
2006 Texas Tech rallied from a 38-7 third quarter deficit to defeat Minnesota 44-41 OT in the Insight Bowl. That was the biggest comeback in bowl game history.
2006 The San Francisco Giants signed LHP Barry Zito to a seven-year deal worth $126 million.
2007 The New England Patriots rallied from 12 points down in the second half to beat the New York Giants, 38-35, becoming the first NFL team to finish a regular season 16-0. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's second scoring pass was his 50th of the season, putting him past Peyton Manning's record of 49, set in 2004.
2007 UCLA named Rick Neuheisel its new head football coach.
2008 Black Monday returned to the NFL, as several coaches were fired: Detroit's Ron Marinelli, whose Lions went 0-16, Jets' Eric Mangini, whose club lost 4 of their last 5 games and missed the playoffs and Cleveland's Romeo Crennel, whose club failed to score an offensive touchdown in the last 31 quarters.
2009 Temple played in its first bowl game in 30 years, but lost to UCLA in the EagleBank Bowl, 30-21.
2010 Baylor played in its first bowl game in 16 years. They lost to Illinois in the Texas Bowl, 38-14.
2010 Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski passed Dean Smith for second place on the all-time NCAA wins list as his No. 1 Blue Devils dominated UNC Greensboro, 108-62.
2011 Baylor defeated Washington 67-56, in the highest scoring game in Alamo Bowl history.
2012 The New Orleans signed head coach Sean Payton to a five-year contract extension.
2012 The Stanford women's basketball had its 82-game home court winning streak snapped when they lost to Connecticut, 61-35.
