CINCINNATI - Xavier capped off the non-conference schedule with a 68-53 victory over Wake Forest at home Saturday night in the annual Skip Prosser Classic. Xavier, winners of five straight games, raised its record to 10-3 heading into its BIG EAST opener on Tuesday against St. John's. Wake, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, fell to 10-3.
This win marked number 100 for Xavier head coach Chris Mack as the head coach of the Musketeers. Mack is in his fifth season as Xavier's head coach and currently holds a 100-47 record. It's extra special for Mack since he played under Prosser at Xavier and coached with Prosser at both Xavier and Wake Forest.
The Musketeers were led by junior Matt Stainbrook, who finished with game highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds, recording his third double-double of the season. Stainbrook hit 9-of-12 from the field. Juniors Isaiah Philmore (9) and Justin Martin and sophomore James Farr (7) also helped Xavier dominate the rebounding battle, 50-34, against a Wake team that came in as the ACC leader and ranked eighth in the country in rebounding.
Xavier finished out the first half with a 20-3 run and led by 15 at halftime, 42-27. Wake Forest was held scoreless for almost eight minutes before hitting a free throw with 1:36 left in the first. The Demon Deacons last field goal of the first half was a three-point bucket by Codi Miller-McIntyre with 9:30 left in the half. The 42 points scored in the first half marked a season-high for Xavier.
Xavier led by 22 points, 59-37, after a pair of free throws by junior Dee Davis at the 12:21 mark. Wake Forest put together a 10-0 run over the next five minutes to close the gap to 59-47 with 7:14 left. Wake would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the game.
Codi Miller-McIntyre led the Demon Deacons in scoring with 11 points followed by Coron Williams with 10 points. Arnaud Adala Moto led Wake Forest in rebounds with six and three points.
Xavier cooled down in the second half, but finished the game shooting 39.4 percent from the field (26-of-66).
Wake Forest finished the game shooting 35.8 percent from the field (19 of 53), 33.3 percent from beyond the arc (5-of-15), and 10-of-21 from the free throw line (47.6 percent).
Xavier opens up BIG EAST play against St. John's at Noon on New Year's Eve at the Cintas Center. The game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports 1. Visit GoXavier.com for the latest news and updates on men's basketball.
