Former New York Yankees 2B Robinson Cano is the latest professional athlete to strike it rich after signing a 10-year, $240 million dollar deal with the Seattle Mariners. This isn’t the first outrageous contract we have seen and it won’t be the last, but have you ever wondered how much Cano will make when it is all broken down?
The average NFL game lasts around three hours but they play only 11 total minutes of football. The rest of the time they are either watching, taking a timeout, in the huddle, etc. The average action in a major league baseball game is only 14 total minutes, despite lasting over three hours. So Robinson Cano is going to play an average of 14 minutes every game and will make $240 million dollars over 10 years. Sounds like we all got into the wrong profession. Yes, I know they travel, they practice and have all kinds of demands put on them, but just for fun, let’s see how much Mr. Cano will make per minute.
If he plays 162 games every season for the 10 year contract, he will play in a total of 1,620 games. 1,620 games times 14 (minutes) equals 22,680 minutes of total baseball. $240 million divided by 22,680 equals $1,058.20. So for every minute Cano actually plays the game, he will make $1,058.20. Think of it…..you go to work and for every minute you actually work, you would get $1,058.20. If you are wondering, he will make $14,815 per game, give or take a few cents.
Parents….make sure your kids grow up to be baseball players!!!!
