BRILES' SYSTEM IS AMERICA'S TOP OFFENSE Baylor leads the country in total offense (635.1 ypg.), scoring offense (55.4 ppg.) and passing efficiency (180.83). The Bears are the only team in the country to be ranked in the top 11 for both passing (4th, 365.9) and rushing offense (11th, 269.2). Baylor's offensive machine has ranked among the nation's top two offenses in each of the past three seasons, the only school to achieve the feat.
AP?TOP 25 TEAMS 0-5 AT FLOYD CASEY LAST THREE SEASONS With the win over No. 12 Oklahoma, Baylor improved 5-0 over the last three seasons vs. Top 25-ranked teams at home (2-0 in both 2012 and 2011).
SUCCESS AT HOME IN `THE CASE' Baylor is on a nine-game winning streak at home and has compiled a 22-3 record in Floyd Casey Stadium over the past three-plus seasons (including having won 18 of its last 19 games). Over its last 19 games in Waco, BU?is beating its opponents by average score of 52-24 (994-458), while totaling an average of 623 yards of offense per game. Baylor plays a school-record tying seven home games during Floyd Casey's curtain-call season in 2013.
BAYLOR HOME WINNING STREAK AMONG NATION'S BEST Baylor's nine straight home wins ties a school record, which has been achieved twice before (2011-12 & 1978-80). The streak is tied for the nation's sixth-longest active streak.
BAYLOR?SCORING?AT?LIGHTNING?PACE The Bears have scored 56 of their 73 offensive TDs this season in under two minutes, including 25 in under one minute. BU is averaging 6.2 plays per scoring?drive in 2013 with an average length of 65.0 yards and an average time of 1:46.
NOVEMBER (AND DECEMBER) IS FOR CONTENDERS Baylor has compiled an FBS best 14-2 mark in November and December since 2011 (10-2 in Nov., 4-0 in Dec.). Included in those games is a 5-2 record vs. Top 25 teams (wins over No. 5 OU in 2011 and No. 2 K-State, No. 23 Oklahoma State and No. 17 UCLA in 2012 and No. 12 Oklahoma in 2013).
THE?NATION'S MOST?BALANCED?OFFENSE Despite scoring quick touchdowns in its first 11 games, Baylor has continued to establish its run game in order to set up the pass play. The Bears have 534 rushes on the season and only 363 passes. Baylor is the nation's only team to rank among the top 25 in both rushing and passing in each of the last four years.
DEFENSE HALF?OF?THE?EQUATION FOR?SUCCESS Baylor's underrated defense doesn't get the credit it deserves, but the success of the Bears is directly related to its stingy D. Baylor ranks 27th nationally in scoring defense (22.2 points per game) and 29th in total defense (355.5 yards per game).
RANKED?VS. RANKED?IN WACO?A?RARE?OCCURENCE Saturday's showdown will only be the 11th game between two ranked teams in Waco ever. This will be only the second time that Baylor and Texas have met as ranked foes in Waco. BU won the last encounter 16-0 in 1980 to secure a SWC title.
BEARS D STEPPING UP A significant, but oft-overlooked, component to Baylor's success in 2013 is the improvement of the defense. The Bears veteran D has made huge strides in defensive coordinator Phil Bennett's third-year on the job. BU ranks 27th nationally and third in the Big 12 in points allowed (22.2/game) and ranks 29th nationally and second in the Big 12 in total yards allowed (355.5/game).
STARTING OFFENSE IS WELL-OILED?MACHINE Baylor's starting offense has had 130 drives that have resulted in 65 touchdowns, 10 field goals, 32 punts, eight turnover on downs, one safety, four missed field goals, two interceptions and eight fumbles (six End Of Halfs not included).
STARTING?FAST BU?has scored first in eight of its 11 games this year to help it outscore its opponents by a combined total of 201-50 in the opening quarter. BU?has put points on the scoreboard in the 1st quarter in 26 of its last 28 games dating back to Nov. 19, 2011.
BAYLOR 24 SENIORS TO BE HONORED PRIOR TO GAME Baylor's game against Texas is also its Senior Day. 24 Baylor football student-athletes will be honored prior to the game. The game will be the last at Floyd Casey Stadium for TE Rhett Butler, S?Ahmad Dixon, CB Demetri Goodson, NB?Sam Holl, C Stefan Huber, PK?Aaron Jones, CB Darius Jones, NB?Prince Kent, LB Eddie Lackey, DE Terrance Lloyd, RB?Glasco Martin, DE Chris McAllister, TE Jerod Monk, CB K.J. CLOSING?DOWN?"THE?CASE" IN?STYLE As part of Baylor's 64th and final season at Floyd Casey Stadium, Baylor has utilized its seven home games in 2013 to celebrate the stadium, highlighted by player reunions surrounding each game that correspond to each of six decades in which the Bears have called Floyd Casey home. For Saturday's game the decade of the 1950s will be recognized and the team will wear Nike retro uniforms, inspired by the 1950 Baylor squad in order to honor the first team to play in Floyd Casey Stadium. An All-Floyd Casey Stadium team was chosen by a selection committee (see page 10), and various video vignettes will air historic moments and personal memories about The Case throughout the season. A record crowd is expected Saturday with tickets being sold out in August and extra bleachers being brought in to accommodate fans.
STARTING D TOUGH TO SCORE ON Baylor's defense ranks 27th nationally in points allowed with 22.2, but has actually only allowed 193 points (17.55/gm) by its starting defense (42 of 206 total points allowed after reserves entered, two came on a safety and seven allowed by special teams. The starting unit has allowed just 26 TDs in 11 games this season.
BAYLOR'S DISRUPTIVE DEFENSE Baylor's veteran defense, which ranks 29th nationally under third-year defensive coordinator Phil Bennett, has proven to be a force in disrupting opposing offenses through 11 games in 2013. The Bears have doubled their average sacks and tackles for loss (compared to recent seasons) and are on pace to top recent totals for interceptions and total turnovers.
OPPORTUNISTIC?DEFENSE Baylor's defense under coordinator Phil Bennett has demonstrated a knack for making big plays at key moments to contribute to the Bears winning ways over the past three seasons. In two-plus years under Bennett, Baylor's D has recorded at least one takeaway in 32 of 37 games - a total of 78 takeaways (49 interceptions, 29 fumbles recovered). Sixty-seven of those 78 takeaways have come over the last 28 games, an average 2.8 per game (Baylor is 23-5 during that stretch). Overall under Bennett, Baylor is 23-2 when recording two or more takeaways. This year, BU?has forced 24 takeaways (15 INTs, nine fumbles).
PERHAPS?THE?NCAA'S BEST?OFFENSE?EVER The Baylor offense is on record pace for scoring and yards this season as the Bears are averaging 55.4 points per game, 635.1 yards per game and 7.8 yards per play. BU's points mark is close to Army's NCAA record of 56.0 in 1944, the Big 12's record of 51.1 by Oklahoma in 2008 and BU's record of 45.3 in 2011. The Bears' yards per game number is on track to be ahead of Houston's NCAA record of 624.9 in 1989 and the program record of 587.08 in 2011. Baylor's yards per play average is just below the pace of Hawaii's NCAA record of 8.6 in 2006, but is still ahead of the program record of 7.63 in 2011.
