Penn State's Lucas Voted Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year

Penn State’s Maggie Lucas garnered Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year accolades from the coaches and media, the conference office announced on Thursday. In addition, the Nebraska Cornhuskers were selected as the preseason conference favorites by both voting panels.
Lucas’ selection marks the third straight season a Lady Lion has been named Preseason Player of the Year, following former teammate Alex Bentley’s honors prior to the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Last year’s consensus pick as Big Ten Player of the Year, Lucas is a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection and enters her senior campaign among the candidates for the Wade Trophy and Wooden Award. She carries a career scoring average of 18.4 points per game and already ranks among the Big Ten’s career leaders in three-point field goals.
Nebraska returns four starters from last year’s squad that won 25 games, advanced to the Sweet 16 and finished the year 18th in the coaches’ poll. Senior Jordan Hooper, who earned 2013 Preseason All-Conference honors from both the coaches and media, is a Wade Trophy and Wooden Award candidate. She boasts career averages of 17.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
Two-time defending champion Penn State was picked to finish second by both the coaches and media this season. The Lady Lions recorded 26 wins and the outright conference crown a season ago and return two starters from last year’s squad that was ranked 12th in the final coaches’ poll.
Michigan State was picked to finish third this season by both voting panels. The Spartans won 25 games and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Michigan State returns three starters and nine letterwinners from last season.
Both Hooper and Lucas are joined by Minnesota’s Rachel Banham and Purdue’s Courtney Moses as consensus Preseason All-Big Ten honorees, earning the nod from both the coaches and media. Lucas was a unanimous selection by both groups, Hooper was a unanimous pick by the coaches and Banham was a unanimous choice by the media. Iowa’s Samantha Logic was voted to the media’s preseason squad and Michigan State’s Klarissa Bell was a preseason coaches’ team selection.
