Dig Pink Friday as IUVB Hosts Northwestern
October 9, 2013INDIANA SPORTS PAGE
Indiana Volleyball (8-7, 0-4) plays host to Northwestern (9-7, 1-3) on Friday and Illinois (6-8, 2-2) on Saturday. Friday's match is a Dig Pink match, and everyone is encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer research. The first 150 fans to arrive on Friday will receive "24 Sports/1 Cause" t-shirts. Both of this weekend's matches will be streamed live on BTN.com, with the Voice of IU Volleyball, Pierce Cavanaugh, on the call.
Northwestern is led by one of the nation's most productive attackers, Stephanie Holthus. Holthus has 242 kills on the season (4.1 per set). She ranks among the nation's top 40 in kills per set and points per set on the 2013 season.
Illinois has played an unbelievably tough schedule to date, playing 14 matches, with 10 of those opponents in this week's top 25 and 12 at least receiving votes in this week's national poll. Redshirt sophomore Jocelynn Birks leads the Illini charge with 204 kills on the season.
HAVERLY PURSUING HISTORY
This season, Haverly has 123 kills and is one of four Hoosiers with more than 100 terminations. The Cherry Hill, Ill., native ranks fourth on the IU squad in kills, no longer having to carry as much of the burden. Look for the senior to have a stronger 2013 season with less stress being placed on her surgically repaired knee.
Haverly has 921 career digs and is just 79 away from becoming the first Hoosier ever to accumulate 1,500 kills and 1,000 digs.
HANSEN PASSES 1000
Hansen has started out the Big Ten slate strong, averaging 4.07 digs per set in the first four matches of conference play, a mark that ranks third in the Big Ten through two weeks of conference action. The senior upped her level of play for the Big Ten slate, as she averaged 3.39 digs per set during the non-conference slate.
PUT IT AWAY-LE
Nwaeze leads the team in service aces, blocks and points (11, 43, 169.5). The sophomore transferred in from Miami (FL) and has immediately become a go to player for the Hoosiers in crunch time. On the first weekend of the season, Nwaeze earned MVP honors after leading the Hoosiers to the Indiana Invitational title and a 3-0 record.
Leach has 146 kills to lead the team in 2013, one of four Hoosiers with 100+ kills. Leach has thrived in a new role this season, moving to the right side full time since the beginning of the conference slate after rotating to the position while also playing some in the middle early in the season. Leach played solely in the middle during her first two years at IU.

LEADING THE CHARGE
Henderson and Hansen will be the team's designated leaders on the court. Each of the four members of the Leadership Counsel will be the team's go-to leader for designated areas. Hicks will be in charge of Game Day Preparation, Haverly will take the lead for Academics, Leach is in charge of Treatment and Recovery, and Gallagher will spearhead Community Outreach.
