COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S OBSERVATIONS
Another weekend of college football is in the record books and this past weekend was one of the easiest weekend’s predicting the outcome of the games. We went 44-4. Not bad for calling games straight up. Here is what we learned after the fourth week:
Fresno State is for real. QB Derek Carr threw for 460 yards and four TD’s against once mighty Boise State. The Bulldogs are now 3-0 and ranked 25th in the AP poll.
Louisville shouldn’t play Florida International. The Cards needed only the first half of the opening quarter to figure out this was going to be a blow out. The final: 72-0. Louisville outgained FIU 464-30.
Ohio State shouldn’t play Florida A&M. This game was just as bad as the Louisville game. The final 76-0. Maybe the Buckeyes thought they were playing Florida!
Pittsburgh beat Duke. That was no surprise. The surprise was the score: 58-55. There was very little defense on either side of the football. Pitt finished with 598 yards of total offense, Duke with 532. I thought Pitt would have been better than this.
If Michigan State only had an offense! The Spartans played well against Notre Dame defensively but couldn’t score the football. Michigan State did outgain the Irish, but managed only two FG’s in the second half.
Lane Kiffin’s better days are behind him. The Trojans beat Utah State 17-14? Kiffin is reaping what he has sown.
Purdue is a bad football team. Watching the Boilermakers against Wisconsin showed me Darrell Hazel has very little talent to work with. This project will take time.
Baylor got nothing in its win over Louisiana-Monroe (70-7). At the end of the first quarter, the Bears were leading 35-0. Like Ohio State and Louisville, Baylor must find better opponents. I know there are only so many teams in college football, but come on!
Miami of Florida is also guilty of playing a very bad opponent…or one that was completely outmatched. The U beat up on Savannah State 77-7. The Hurricanes were leading 56-0 at halftime and then score another 28 in the third quarter. Miami outgained Savannah 637-183.
Michigan is overrated! The Wolverines survived a scare by Akron last week and barely got by UCONN this week 24-21. Michigan Coach Brady Hoke said they have a major problem and it needs to get fixed. The problem may be at QB and turnovers!
Indiana did it again….NO DEFENSE! The Hoosiers lost 45-28 but it could have been worse if Missouri didn’t turn the ball over three times in the first half. IU gave up 623 yards of total offense.
Texas rebounded to beat Kansas State. If they didn’t, I believe Mack Brown would be unemployed. I still don’t think he is safe.
Picking winners this week in college football won’t be as easy this week and we shouldn’t see as many blowouts. There are some very good games on tap in week five:
Virginia Tech 3-1 @ Georgia Tech 3-0
South Carolina 2-1 @ Central Florida 3-0
LSU 4-0 @ Georgia 2-1
Iowa 3-1 @ Minnesota 4-0
Oklahoma 4-0 @ Notre Dame 3-1
Ole Miss 3-0 @ Alabama 3-0
Texas A&M 3-1 @ Arkansas 3-1
Arizona 3-1 @ Washington 3-0
Wisconsin 3-1 @ Ohio State 4-0
Stanford 3-0 @ Washington State 3-1
