Michigan 59, Central Michigan 9: Devin Gardner ran for two touchdowns and threw for another in the first half as No. 17 Michigan went on to beat Central Michigan 59-9 in college football.
Penn State 23, Syracuse 17: Christian Hackenberg threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns in his collegiate debut to lead Penn State to a 23-17 win over Syracuse at Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
Ohio State 40, Buffalo 20: Braxton Miller threw two touchdown passes before fighting leg cramps and Jordan Hall ran for two more scores to lead No. 2 Ohio State to a 40-20 victory over Buffalo on Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
Illinois 42, Southern Illinois 34: Nathan Scheelhaase threw for 416 yards and two touchdowns to lead the University of Illinois to a 42-34 season opening win over Southern Illinois.
Wisconsin 45, UMass 0: Melvin Gordon ran for 144 yards, James White added 143 and No. 23 Wisconsin's revamped defense pitched a shutout in coach Gary Andersen's debut for a 45-0 win Saturday over Massachusetts.
Cincinnati 42, Purdue 7: Munchie Legaux regained his job as the starting quarterback and had a solid showing on Saturday, throwing for a touchdown and running for another in Cincinnati's 42-7 victory over Purdue.
Northern Illinois 30, Iowa 27: Northern Illinois capped a fourth-quarter comeback with a field goal with only four seconds on the clock to post a 30-27 win over host Iowa on Saturday.
