Ball State football quick hits
Ball State finished the 2012 season with a 9-4 overall record and a 6-2 mark in Mid-American Conference action . . . The Cardinals' three regular season losses -- Clemson, Northern Illinois and Kent State -- were to teams that completed the regular season with a combined record of 33-5.
The nine wins in 2012 tied for the third most victories in a single season in school history and marked the most wins since 12 in 2008 and 10 in 1978 . . . Ball State football teams also compiled nine wins in 1965, 1975 and 1977.
Ball State won six straight games to end the regular season last year, marking its first six game winning streak since 2008. The Cardinals ended the regular season with wins in their final five MAC games and their final four road games.
The Cardinals' six MAC wins in a single season were the most since their 8-0 campaign in 2008 . . . It marked only the second time since 1996 the Cardinals have won at least six league games.
Ball State was bowl eligible for a second straight season in 2012 and played in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl . . . The Cardinals were last bowl eligible in back-to-back seasons in 2007 and 2008 and Ball State played in the International Bowl after the 2007 campaign and the GMAC Bowl after the 2008 season.
The Cardinals beat two teams from the Bowl Championship Series Automatic Qualifying Conferences in the same year for the first time in school history . . . Ball State defeated Indiana from the Big Ten Conference 41-39 Sept. 15, and tallied a 31-27 win over South Florida from the Big East Conference Sept. 22 . . . The win over Indiana marked the third straight meeting between the two teams the Cardinals have won.

Scouting Illinois State: The Redbirds managed a 9-4 overall record in 2012 and advanced to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs for just the fourth time in school history . . . Illinois State heads into the season ranked No. 13 in The Sports Network FCS Top 25 preseason poll . . . Illinois State returns 12 starters from last year's team, including first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selections Colton Underwood and Jordan Neukirch . . . Both were named preseason All-America selections by The Sports Network, and Underwood was named to the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List, after finishing sixth overall in the 2012 vote.
Series vs. Illinois State: Ball State and Illinois State have met 16 times with the Cardinals holding an 11-5 all-time advantage . . . The two teams last met in 1993 with Ball State posting a 45-30 win in Muncie, Ind. . . . The schools have met eight times in Muncie, with the Cardinals holding a 6-2 all-time edge . . . The series began in 1957 and was played four straight seasons before meeting eight times in the 1970s, twice in the 1980s and twice in the 1990s.
