Sycamore Volleyball To Conduct Blue-White Scrimmage Saturday In Arena

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – A new season is about to begin for the Indiana State volleyball team and fans will have an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the Sycamores before the season starts as the team will compete in a Blue-White Scrimmage at 5 p.m. (ET) Saturday in the Indiana State Arena.
The Sycamores will be divided into two teams and play five sets during the competition.
“This will be a great chance for fans to come out and get to know our athletes,” Traci Dahl, Indiana State head coach, said. “And it will be a great way for the players to get some court time before the season starts. I encourage everyone to come to the Arena Saturday to meet the team.”
A social will be held at the Ballyhoo Pizza King & Tavern (900 Chestnut Street) immediately after the scrimmage. There will be a $5.00 cover charge with pizza available.
The Sycamore’s will be on the road for their first six contests of the 2013 campaign. Indiana State will play SIU Edwardsville and Akron at the SIUE Cougar Classic (Aug. 30-31), travel to Chicago State (Sept. 3) and go up against Georgetown, Campbell, and North Carolina Central at the Hampton Inn of Holly Springs Invitational hosted by Campbell University (Sept. 6-7).
The home opener for Indiana State will come on Sept. 10 when the Sycamores entertain the IUPUI Jaguars in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m. (ET). Indiana State will be back on the road to compete in the Wright State Invitational Presented by Holiday Inn (Sept. 13-14) where the will play against Murray State, Robert Morris, and Wright State.
The Sycamores will play two more non-conference games during the season, both at home, as they will host Chicago State (Sept. 24) and St. Louis University (Oct. 22).
The 2013 Missouri Valley Conference season will begin at home for the Sycamores with Indiana State hosting Southern Illinois (Sept. 20) and Evansville (Sept. 21) on the first weekend of the conference campaign. Indiana State will also host MVC opponents Missouri State (Oct. 11), Wichita State (Oct. 12), Illinois State (Oct. 25), Loyola (Nov. 1), Bradley (Nov. 2), Drake (Nov. 15), and Northern Iowa (Nov. 16).
The road portion of the conference season starts with Illinois State (Sept. 27) and begins a three-game road swing for the Sycamores in MVC play. Indiana State will also play at Bradley (Oct. 4), Loyola (Oct. 5), Drake (Oct. 18), Northern Iowa (Oct. 19), Wichita State (Nov. 8), Missouri State (Nov. 9), Evansville (Nov. 22) and Southern Illinois (Nov. 23).
The 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament will be played in Wichita, Kan., this year on Nov. 28-30.
Three seniors will be leading the Sycamores this season including Morgan Dall who returns to the court after missing the 2012 season due to an injury. The 5-foot-11-inch outside hitter (Aviston, Ill.) was one of the Sycamores top hitters during her first three seasons and is ready to again lead the Indiana State attack.
Also returning for their senior campaign is veteran setter Loni Mackinson and versatile athlete Molly Murphy. Mackinson (Pontiac, Ill.) has been one of the top setters in the conference since she first stepped onto the court for Indiana State and will be the set up artist for the Sycamore attack this season. Murphy (Chicago, Ill.) can play a variety of positions for the Sycamores and will be looked on to be one of the keys to the Sycamore success. Both were starters a year ago.
Other returning starters are Kyla Thomas (Indianapolis, Ind.), the only junior on the team this year, and sophomore Cassandra Willis (Lawton, Mich.) who were instrumental in the middle during the 2012 season.
Two other sophomores return for their second season with Indiana State including setter Erika Nord (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and outside hitter Victoria Swigart (Plainfield, Ill.).
Five newcomers join the Sycamores for the 2013 season including sophomore defensive specialist Taylor Reckards (St. Charles, Ill.), freshman middle blocker Melody Burdette (Downey, Calif.), freshman defensive specialist Shannon Murphy (Chicago, Ill.), freshman outside hitter Kynedi Nalls (Fort Worth, Tex.), and freshman outside hitter Bree Spangler (Coldwater, Mich.)
