Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start on the pole for Saturday's Quaker State 400 after edging Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson in qualifying at Kentucky Speedway. Earnhardt capitalized on cloudy skies and cooler track temperatures during his qualifying run to set a new track record on Friday with a lap at 183.636 mph. The top-9 finishers in qualifying broke the previous record of 181.818 mph at Kentucky, set by Johnson one year ago.
The Miami Heat announced Friday that guard Ray Allen has exercised his player option for the 2013-14 season. Allen averaged 10.6 points while shooting 54.5 percent on 3-pointers in the NBA Finals. The veteran made his presence felt in Game 6 when his buzzer- beater forced overtime. The Heat went on to beat the San Antonio Spurs in seven games for their second straight title.
