2013 CAROLINA PANTHERS PREVIEW

Carolina Panthers (2012 - Pres)

LAST YEAR: 7-9, fourth in NFC South

HEAD COACH: Ron Rivera, third year.

QB Cam Newton didn’t put up the numbers he did in his rookie season so some are wondering about his development in his sophomore season.  The Panthers are hoping new offensive coordinator Mike Shula will help Newton take his game to a new level.  The Panthers’ offense wasn’t terrible in 2012 but we all expected more.

New GM Dave Gettleman made several moves in the off-season through free agency and a good draft and if all his plans fall into place, the Panthers will be a better football team in 2013.   One thing the Panthers can do is play like they did in the second half of 2012 and coach Ron Rivera is planning on building off if the second half.

Back to Cam Newton; he was inconsistent last year.  He also wasn’t as mature as expected.   If Carolina is to continue to develop, Newton will have to continue to step up.  Newton will have RB’s DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart that will help in his maturation.  Carolina added Ted Ginn Jr. from San Francisco and WR Domenik Hixon from the Giants.  Veteran Steve Smith returns as does TE Greg Olsen.  A big concern will be the offensive line as the Panthers didn’t do enough to make the necessary upgrades.

On defense, the Panthers are very strong at the linebacker position.  The trio of Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis and Jon Beason are the heart of the defense.  Carolina did help themselves on the defensive line back drafting Star Lotuleli from Utah and Kawaan Short from Purdue with their first two picks.  In the secondary, Carolina signed veterans Drayton Florence and D.J. Moore to join Captain Munnerlyn in the secondary.    The question will be if any of the three are every down DB’s?   The Panthers will need to be solid in the defensive backfield because they play in a very tough, pass happy division.

Coach Rivera may not make it the entire season if the Panthers get off to a slow start.

 Carolina Panthers (2012 - Pres)

2013 DRAFT PICKS

1 (14) - Star Lotulelei, Utah

 2 (44) - Kawann Short, DT Purdue

4 (108) Edmund Kugbila, OG, Valdosta State

 5 (148) - A.J. Klein, ILB, Iowa State

 6 (182) - Kenjon Barner, RB, Oregon

Top Picks Analysis: New general manager Dave Gettleman decided to create a defensive identity inside by selecting back-to-back defensive tackles in the first and second rounds. Lotulelei is a run-stuffer in the mold of Haloti Ngata while Short is an athletic wonder, whose motor gets questioned on occasion.

Best Value Pick: Barner has the kind of elite straight-line speed that will make a defense think twice. If Carolina can manufacture some touches for this kid in space, look out.

Questionable Calls: Kugbila doesn't move all that well and had a seventh-round or priority free agent grade from more than one scout. Why Gettleman felt the need to spend a fourth-round choice on him is a head-scratcher.

Summary: This was really a two-pick draft for the Panthers and they took care of a gaping hole at defensive tackle, something that will also benefit 2012 first-round pick Luke Kuechly, the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year, by keeping blockers off of him at the second level.

FINAL GRADE: B-
