Earlham Wins Third-Straight HCAC Men’s Tennis Tourney Title

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Earlham College’s men’s tennis team claimed the school’s third
straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference team championship on Sunday
afternoon. The Quakers finished in first place during the regular season with a
perfect 9-0 mark and claimed the tournament title at West Indy Racquet Club in
Earlham posted a 5-0 win over Rose-Hulman before knocking off No. 2 seed
Transylvania in the championship.

In Sunday’s championship match with Transy, the Quakers earned a 5-0 victory.
Earlham jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles action and proceeded to win two
singles matches to put the match away.
EC’s Anton Bartashevich (Moscow, Russia) and Jack Ventura-Cruess (Placentia, Calif.)
knocked off Robert Albrecht (Lexington, Ky.) and Zach Meikle (Nicholasville, Ky.) of
Transylvania at No. 1 doubles 8-3. Freshman Phillip Locklear (Springboro, Ohio) and
sophomore Kyle Richter (Fremont, Calif.) teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles,
while senior Brad Maisey (Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand) and junior Andrey Gavrilov
(Yaroslavl, Russia) earned an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Earlham earned wins at No. 3 and 4 singles to put the match out of
reach. Richter earned a win at No. 3 singles over Josh Buckman (Owensboro, Ky.)
6-2, 6-1 and Maisey knocked off Transy’s Meikle at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
With claiming the conference title, Earlham has earned the conference’s automatic
bid to play in the NCAA Division III tennis championships beginning May 10. It will
be the school’s third appearance in the Division III NCAA tennis tournament.
