Baseball Team Defeats Eastern Michigan 6-4

Ball State's baseball team tallied a 6-4 win at Eastern Michigan Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in the three game series with the Eagles. With the win, Ball State improved to 21-20 on the season and 10-10 in Mid-American Conference action.
Chris Marangon improved to 3-3 on the year after pitching six innings, allowing seven hits and striking out one. T.J. Weir, who is 2-2 as a pitcher, tallied his third save of the year. He pitched the eighth and ninth innings, allowing no hits and striking out four.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead with a four run second inning. With runners on first and second, Ryan Spaulding singled through the left side to score Blake Beemer and give Ball State a 1-0 lead. Sam Tidaback singled to load the bases and Elbert Devarie doubled to right and scored Spaulding and Billy Wellman. Wes Winkle's ground out scored Tidaback and the Cardinals led 4-0.
After allowing one run in the fourth and one in the fifth, Ball State took a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning and scored two runs in the top half to lead 6-2. The Cardinals firepower was a Winkle home run to left field that also scored Tidaback. It marked Winkle's first HR of the season and gave Ball State the four run advantage.
Ball State allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but maintained its lead in the final two frames to record the 6-4 victory.
Winkle was 1-for-5 on the day with a team high three runs-batted-in, while Devarie was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Spaulding managed a 1-for-3 performance from the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Tidaback was 2-for-2 on the day with two runs scored.
The two teams will complete the three game series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday at Eastern Michigan. EMU fell to 21-23 overall and 9-11 in the MAC with the loss.
