WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Oregon junior first baseman Ryon Healy has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and UCLA junior right-handed pitcher Nick Vander Tuig has been tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for April 22-28, the Conference office announced Monday.
Healy batted .400 (6-for-15) with a double, two home runs, seven RBI and three runs scored as the Ducks went 4-0 on the week and swept Stanford for the first time since the baseball program was reinstated in 2009. The West Hills, Calif. native was instrumental in Oregon’s sweep of the Cardinal, hitting .455 (5-for-11) with both of his home runs and all seven of his RBI coming in the weekend set. He hit a pair of two-run home runs in a 6-4 victory on Saturday and followed up with an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday that plated the tying run and advanced the eventual winning run. Healy leads the Pac-12 with nine home runs and ranks second in the league in RBI (42) and doubles (14). His 59 hits on the year rank third in the Conference.
This is Healy’s second career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and Oregon’s 10th all-time selection. Healy also earned the distinction on Feb. 19 after leading the Ducks to a season-opening series sweep of Hawaii.
Vander Tuig pitched the second complete game of his career Saturday afternoon to lead the Bruins to a 10-1 win over Washington State. The Oakdale, Calif. product picked up his third consecutive win to move to 7-3 on the year, after allowing one run on seven hits while matching a season high with eight strikeouts. He did not issue a walk in the game. In his last three starts, Vander Tuig is 3-0 with a 0.41 ERA and 19 strikeouts versus three walks. In the win, he lowered his season ERA to 1.77, a figure that ranks fifth in the Pac-12. Vander Tuig, who has allowed just 15 earned runs in 76.1 innings of work, has struck out 54 batters this season.
This is Vander Tuig’s first career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection and UCLA’s 64th all time. UCLA reliever David Berg picked up Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors last week after helping the Bruins to a trio of road victories last week.
