Baseball Hitter – Jordan Nieman, Manchester University
Manchester University’s Jordan Nieman (Michigan City, Ind./H.S.) led the Spartans to a three game sweep over Bluffton and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week for the second time. The junior third baseman finished the week 6-for-14 (.429) at the plate with three runs scored, two doubles, a triple, two home runs, and six RBI, while slugging 1.143. Nieman increased his current hit streak to 11 as the Spartans clinched at least a share of the HCAC title. No. 15 ranked Manchester (28-5-1, 18-3 HCAC) will close the regular season schedule against Defiance and Mount St. Joseph this week.
Baseball Pitcher – Nolan Schaefer, Anderson University
Anderson University’s Nolan Schaefer (Marshall, Ill./H.S.) allowed only one hit in a 4-1 win over Rose-Hulman Sunday and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week. The junior tossed a one-hitter over seven innings against the Engineers, finishing with three strikeouts, zero runs allowed, and the win. The Ravens (21-16, 15-7 HCAC) stand second in the league standings and will close the regular season at home against Franklin this weekend.
Softball Hitter – Emily Willmann, Manchester University
Manchester University’s Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind./Blackford) led the Spartans into first place in the HCAC standings and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Hitter of the Week. The sophomore shortstop finished the week 8-for-14 (.571) with six runs scored and three RBI, while posting an on-base percentage of .625. Willmann singled in the bottom of the seventh to drive in the winning run against Rose-Hulman Saturday, moving the Spartans into first place with two games remaining. Manchester (17-13, 9-3 HCAC) can clinch the HCAC title with a sweep of Defiance this afternoon.
Softball Pitcher – Kayla Craft, Franklin College
Franklin College’s Kayla Craft (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina) led the Grizzlies into the 2013 HCAC Softball Tournament with a 6-3 win over Mount St. Joseph Saturday and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week. The freshman pitched seven complete innings, allowing three earned runs and seven hits with three strikeouts. The Grizzlies (15-25, 9-7 HCAC) will be the No. 4 seed in this weekend’s tournament.
Men’s Tennis – Phillip Locklear, Earlham College
Earlham College’s Phillip Locklear (Springboro, Ohio/H.S.) led the Quakers to a third consecutive HCAC men’s tennis title with an 8-1 win over Transylvania Saturday and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second time. The freshman teamed with Kyle Richter for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and earned a dominating 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 1 singles position. The Quakers (16-2, 8-0 HCAC) will close the regular season Tuesday against Manchester and open the HCAC tournament Saturday at West Indy Racquet Club against the winner of Rose-Hulman and Hanover at 2:00 PM.
