1968 Kansas City, rewarded with an American League franchise, nicknamed themselves the Royals.
1975 Georgia Tech blasted Earklham, 41-0, the largest margin of victory in NCAA history.
1986 America's Debi Thomas, a pre-med student at Stanford, dethroned Katarina Witt in the world figure skating championships at Geneva.
1994 Michael Jordan was cut from the White Sox roster and sent to their minor league club.
2001 Rick Pitino was named the new head basketball coach at Louisville. He replaced Denny Crum.

2012 The NFL handed down suspensions in "bounty gate". Saints coach Sean Payton was suspended 1 year, former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams received an indefinite suspension, while GM Mickey Loomis was suspended 8 games. The team was also fined $500,000 and lost a second- round pick in each of the next two years.
2012 The Denver Broncos traded QB Tim Tebow and a seventh-round draft pick to the New York Jets for a fourth and sixth-round picks.
