CLEVELAND, Ohio – The 2013 FirstEnergy MAC Women’s Basketball Championship is set, as No. 4 Central Michigan Chippewas and the No. 3 Akron Zips will faceoff Saturday at 1 PM at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
Central Michigan advances to the championship for the second consecutive year behind sophomore Crystal Bradford who has averaged 21.5 points per game in the Chippewas’ two games in the tournament. CMU won their third round game convincingly against No. 5 Bowling Green 81-48, before edging-out No. 1 Toledo on Friday, 66-61. As a team defensively, the Chippewas have forced 51 turnovers in their games, including 34 against perennial power Bowling Green. The 2013 title game will be the Chippewas eighth appearance in school history with two MAC Tournament Championships.
Akron will be making their first appearance in the MAC Tournament Championship game in school history as the Zips defeated No. 7 Buffalo, 83-79, before knocking off No. 2 Ball State, 70-61. MAC Player of the Year Rachel Tecca has played solidly in their two games but it has been the performance so-far in the tournament by Hanna Luburgh that has propelled the Zips. Luburgh has averaged 27.5 points per game in their two matchups including a career-high 33 in the semifinal win over the Cardinals.
Central Michigan leads the all-time series 17-14, after claiming the only meeting between the schools this season, 76-69, on January 26th. The two teams have only met once in the MAC Tournament previously with Central Michigan claiming a 67-59 first round win in 2009.
The game can be seen on the MAC Regional Package, which includes SportsTime Ohio, Comcast Michigan, ESPN Full Court and ESPN3. The game will also stream via the MAC Digital Network.
