1961 Mickey Wright won the LPGA Championship by nine strokes over Louise Suggs, her third in the last four years.
1966 Chicago's Bobby Hull established a record for points scored in one season with his 51st point in a game against the Rangers.
1966 In the last race of his 40-year career, John Longden won the San Juan Capistrano Handicap at Santa Anita Park, aboard George Royal. He retired with a then-record number of victories, 6,032.
1972 It was Bill Russell Day at Boston Garden, as his uniform No. 6 was retired in afternoon ceremonies.
1973 Hall of Famer Frankie Frish, known as the "Fordham Flash", died at the age of 72.
1982 Cam Fella won the New Faces Series final for 3-year-old pacers in 1:58 at the Meadowlands.
