No. 9/6 Irish Return Home To Meet Detroit In Tuesday Tilt

No. 9/6 University of Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team returns for a 6 p.m. Tuesday
tilt with Detroit inside the Loftus Sports Center.
The Irish (3-0) trailed 4-0 just 3:08 into the contest with the Dukes, but stormed
back to out-score the home squad 10-4, including 7-3 in the second half. Leading the
charge seniors Jenny Granger (2G, 3A) and Jaimie Morrison (2G) and junior
All-American Margaret Smith (2G, 3DC, 3CT). In goal senior Ellie Hilling stopped a
season-high 12 shots and played her third consecutive complete game to open the
season.
For their efforts in helping the Irish to a perfect 2-0 week, Smith (Defensive
Player of the Week) and Morrison (Weekly Honor Roll) both earned recognition from
the BIG EAST for the first time this season.
The Detroit game will mark the second home game of the season for the Irish and the
second inside Loftus. Last week Notre Dame topped No. 13/18 Ohio State, 13-8, with
the help of Smith, who turned in a monster game on both ends of the field with four
goals, four ground balls, three draw controls and five caused turnovers.
Detroit (1-3) is coming off an 11-10 road loss to first-year lacrosse program
Marquette. The Titans previously defeated Delaware State, 15-1, for their lone win
of the season. A pair of 13-7 setbacks to Robert Morris and Siena on the road opened
the 2013 campaign.
The Titans boast six players who have scored four or more goals this year including
Michaela Schwartz, who leads the team with seven. Zaynib Hamze paces the squad in
just about every major statistical category including assists (4), ground balls
(13), draw controls (11) and caused turnovers. Hamze is also tied for second in
goals (6). In goal Lexie McCormick has 41 saves in 196:39 of action and sports an
11.29 GAA.
