MIAMI PRESS RELEASE

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Miami forced extra innings with two unearned runs in the ninth, but a bases-loaded single with two outs in the 11th lifted Furman to a 6-5 victory over the RedHawks Friday afternoon at Latham Field.

Nate Bowles and Chad Sedio each had a pair of hits for Miami (0-3). Brooks Fiala struck out eight batters, one shy of his career high, scattering seven hits over seven innings.

The RedHawks trailed 5-3 with two outs in the ninth, but were able to claw their way back. With two outs and a runner on first, Matt Honchel hit a roller to third that was thrown away, putting runners at second and third. An infield single on a chopper to first by Bowles made the score 5-4 before a wild pitch evened the game.

Sedio's two-run single in the second gave the RedHawks a 2-1 lead. Furman answered with a two-run double in the third to go back in front, but the RedHawks equalized in the fifth.

Bowles reached on a fielder's choice, then moved to third on two wild pitches. He came home when a infield fly was misplayed into a fielder's choice.

Furman retook the lead in the sixth when a one-out single was followed by a long fly over the wall in left field.

Charles Zubrod, who replaced Fiala at the start of the eighth inning, took the loss to fall to 0-1. He allowed five hits and a walk in 3.2 innings, while striking out three. Relievers Seth Varner and Charlie Suich each faced a batter in the 11th, allowing a walk and the game-winning hit, respectively.

Ryan Ditmer (1-0) retired all six batters he faced in the 10th and 11th innings to earn the win.

The RedHawks continue play in the First Pitch Invitational tomorrow morning when it plays Western Carolina. The action starts at 10 a.m.
