1920 Baseball banned all pitches that involved the use of a foreign substance.
1962 Jim Beatty became the first American to break the four-minute barrier for an indoor mile. Beatty recorded a time of 3:58:9 in a Los Angeles meet.
1969 LSU's Pete Maravich scored 66 points in a 110-94 defeat to Tulane.
1978 Quick Work won the inaugural Su Mac Lad Series final for older trotters in 2:00.1 at the Meadowlands.
1989 K.C. Jones and Lenny Wilkens, along with William "Pop" Gates, were voted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
1990 Boxer Mike Tyson suffered his first professional loss, a shocking 10th-round knockout by James "Buster" Douglas in Tokyo.
1991 Philadelphia's Charles Barkley scored 17 points and pulled down 22 rebounds to lead the East All Stars to a 116-114 win over the West. Barkley won the MVP for the game.
1992 Bonnie Blair became the first woman to successfully defend an Olympic Gold medal in 500-meter speed skating and the first American woman in any sport to win gold medals in consecutive Olympics.
2000 Seattle Mariners traded OF Ken Griffey Jr. to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for four players.
2003 Detroit Red Wings Brett Hull scored his 700th career goal in the club's 5-4 win over the San Jose Sharks. Hull became the sixth member of the 700-goal club.
2003 In College Hockey, Boston University beat rival Boston College, 3-2, to win the prestigious Beanpot Tournament.
2004 The Philadelphia 76ers fired head coach Randy Ayers.
2007 Nate Kaeding's 21-yard field goal, as time expired, gave the AFC a 31-28 victory over the NFC in the 37th rendition of the Pro Bowl.
2008 Adrian Peterson rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns, and Terrell Owens caught two TD receptions in the NFC's 42-30 win over the AFC in the Pro Bowl.
2009 Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant became the youngest player in league history to reach the 23,000-point plateau in the team's 105-98 victory over the Oklahoma City Tunder.
2009 California State Athletic Commission suspended the licenses of championship fighter Antonio Margarito and his trainer, Javier Capetillo, for at least one year after a substance was found inside the boxer's gloves prior to a fight against "Sugar" Shane Mosley.
2011 Jerry Sloan resigned as head coach of the Utah Jazz, stepping down in the middle of his 23rd season with the team. Tyrone Corbin was named the new head coach.
