NFL fines Redskins' Shanahan $25K for berating referee

Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who said his emotions got the best of him when he earned a critical unsportsmanlike conduct penalty Sunday, has been fined $25,000 for berating a referee, according to a person with knowledge of the fine who requested anonymity because the league has not officially announced the fine.

Shanahan walked onto the field screaming at replacement officials during a chaotic finish to the Redskins' loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Kyle Shanahan later chased replacement officials into the tunnel after the game's bizarre finish, berating them with a series of expletives, according to several reports.

Shanahan, head coach Mike Shanahan's son, issued a statement Monday, explaining the penalty, which pushed the Redskins to midfield on the game's final drive.

"I know that I need to handle those situations better in the future," he said. "My emotions got the best of me, and I know it's my responsibility. This will never happen again."

The Redskins were trailing 38-31 with 29 seconds left and were on Cincinnati's 19-yard line before the controversy started. After a 15-yard sack of quarterback Robert Griffin III on third-and-25, tight end Fred Davis was called for a false start, and the referee announced a 10-second runoff that would have ended the game.
