One was expected, the other was not necessarily a surprise, but it wasn’t decided until the final tally of the night.
Hagerstown’s girls cross country team improved its cumulative season record to 42-1, while the boys edged out two-time champion Northeastern by three points to sweep Thursday’s Wayne County cross country meet at the IU East course on Thursday.
The Tigers won three of four Wayne County team championships, including the boys middle school title, and had individual titles from Hayley Rogers in the varsity girls race and Jevon Osborne in the middle school boys race.
“I enjoyed the night, pretty good night for Hagerstown,” varsity Tigers coach Kent Gray said. “ ... I’m very proud of the way the boys performed. I thought they ran well tonight — and the girls did what they were supposed to do, go out and win, run a solid race and that’s what they did.”
Hagerstown had four of the top 10 girls in Rogers (first), Sydney Denhart (second), Joanna Smith (fifth), and Amelia Dick (seventh), while No. 5 runner Erin Hoodlebrink was 11th.
For the boys, the fight for the championship was a bit tighter.
