BALL STATE: Women's Volleyball Splits Saturday Matches

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's volleyball team closed play in the 2012 Active Ankle Challenge with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-15, 17-25, 25-18) victory over Illinois State Saturday evening at Worthen Arena.
"It was great to see the passion and intensity our team came out with tonight after a tough loss to VCU this morning," said BSU head coach Steve Shondell. "We played a lot better match this evening, cutting down on a lot of our errors from this morning. Both VCU and Illinois State have strong volleyball programs and I am glad we were able to come out with a split today."
In Saturday's nightcap, three Cardinals tallied double-digit kills to lift the Ball State offense to another strong outing. Junior outside hitter Kylee Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) led all players with 14 kills, while junior middle blocker Mindy Marx (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) added 11 and senior outside hitter Kara Bates (Bradley, Ill./Bradley Bourbonnais Community/Maryland) added 10.
For their efforts over the entire tournament, both Baker and Bates were named to the 2012 Ball State Active Ankle All-Tournament Team. They were joined on the squad by Anna Pashkova (Gardner-Webb), Ashley Rosch (Illinois State), Martina Samadan (VCU), Amanda Love (VCU) and tournament most valuable player Jasmine Waters (VCU).
Baker would add six digs and a pair of aces in the victory, giving her a tournament best seven aces over the three matches. Bates tallied nine digs and two aces of her own, while Marx collected a pair of solo blocks.
Junior setter Jacqui Seidel (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) continued her solid all-around play, racking up her third double-double of the season and fifth of her career with 40 assists and 16 digs. She also served up two more aces and added four kills.
Junior libero Catie Fredrich (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) added a match-best and season-high 20 digs, while senior defensive specialist Claire Farkas (Granger, Ind./Marion) tallied a career-best 10 digs.
Shannon McGlaughlin led the Redbirds with 10 kills, while Jenny Menendez added a team-best 19 digs. All-Tournament selection Ashley Rosch collected a match-high five blocks, to go along with 15 digs and three kills.
Overall, the Cardinals held a .204 (53-24-142) to .177 (39-17-124) hitting advantage in the contest, while out-acing the Redbirds 10-4. BSU also held a 64-54 lead in digs, while ISU out-blocked Ball State 8-3.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will have a quick recovery period, as it travels up I-69 Tuesday to battle in-state rival IPFW in a 7 p.m. showdown.

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The BSU women's volleyball team opened the second day of the 2012 Ball State Active Ankle Challenge with a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 21-25) loss to VCU Saturday morning at Worthen Arena.
In the loss, junior opposite attacker Lauren Grant (Eagan, Minn./Eastview) led the Ball State attack with 13 kills, while also posting a pair of block assists.
Junior outside hitter Kylee Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) logged her 16th career double-double, posting 12 kills and 10 digs. She also served up two of BSU's four aces.
Despite two Cardinals reaching double-digit kills, it was the Rams' defense which kept the Ball State offense in check for much of the morning with 17.5 team blocks. Martina Samadan and Jasmine Waters each collected eight blocks in the win, while Kristin Boyd had a team-best 12 kills.
In the backcourt, BSU libero Catie Fredrich (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) led all players with 17 digs. Junior setter Jacqui Seidel (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) also added 10 digs, while handing out 41 assists to record her second double-double of the year and the fourth of her career.
The BSU women's volleyball team concludes play in the 2012 Active Ankle Challenge later this evening, with a 7 p.m. match versus Illinois State.
