Aiming at solid starts

Union County lost quite a bit from the 2011 regional championship-winning volleyball squad.

Emily Oberschlake, Jessica Lewis, Lacey Zimmers and Larissa Stephen all graduated from the court. Another loss — reigning Palladium-Item Volleyball Coach of the Year Rachel Sweeney is gone as well.

While other teams in the area look to take advantage, first-year head coach Chris Wiederhold is confident that the Patriots have gained enough talent to remain a strong competitor.

The Patriots highlight strong teams set to battle for conference titles and advance past their sectionals.

Wiederhold is making his head-coaching debut at the high school level, but has been around the sport long enough to know good volleyball when he sees it.

He says that is just what he has seen from the Patriots.
