Ryan Lochte easily won the men's 400-meter individual medley Saturday night for the first swimming gold medal awarded at the London Olympics. Michael Phelps was kept off the Olympic podium for the first time since he was 15, beaten by three other swimmers in a race he had won in each of the last two games. Phelps' fourth-place finish came after he barely qualified for the final in the morning heats, taking the eighth and final spot by just .07 seconds with one final surge. Brazil's Thiago Pereira and Japan's Kosuke Hagino also bested Phelps, taking silver and bronze. Lochte beat Pereira to the wall by 3.68 seconds -- a route -- for his fourth career gold and seventh Olympic medal overall.
Also Saturday, Natalie Coughlin tied fellow swimmers Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres for the most Olympic medals among American women when she claimed her 12th despite not swimming the final of the 400-meter freestyle relay. Missy Franklin, Jessica Hardy, Lia Neal and Allison Schmitt won bronze behind Australia and the Netherlands but Coughlin picked up a medal, too, because she swam in the qualifying heats Saturday morning.
