DETROIT — Season-openers for college football teams are always big games. If the first game is a conference outing for both, the stakes ratchet up even more.
Ball State and Eastern Michigan are preparing for that scenario five weeks from today. They’ll play each other at Scheumann Stadium in Muncie in a contest that will kick off their Mid-American Conference schedules.
“Being the first game, it’s a statement about your physicality, your toughness, and you get to see the results of how you prepared all summer,” Cardinals middle linebacker Travis Freeman said. “It’s a great evaluation period for your team, along with playing somebody in your conference. What’s better than that?”
The Cardinals and Eagles aren’t necessarily natural rivals despite both being members of the MAC West Division.
