Starting quarterback Johnny McEntee returns as does scrambler Scott McCummings, but this is a position in need of a major upgrade. The Huskies added Chandler Whitmer, who passed for 3,022 yards and 25 touchdowns in one season at Butler County (Kan.) Community College, to a crowded quarterback mix in the spring. Whitmer signed with Illinois out of high school but transferred to junior college after his redshirt year. The coaches wouldn’t say it, but it was clear he was the best quarterback in the Spring Game. Receiver has been upgraded with Shakim Phillips, a transfer from Boston College, and Bryce McNeal, a transfer from Clemson. Senior Mike Smith, who missed last season for academic reasons, was probably the most consistent offensive player through spring ball. Nick Williams, another senior, is poised to make an impact in 2012. READ MORE: http://www.athlonsports.com/college-football/top-25/connecticut-2012
